On Wednesday March 29, 2017 the 12th Street SE Bridge, (also known as the St. George Island Bridge) informally called the Zoobridge by most Calgarians, was closed permanently.
The steel-truss structure will soon be removed from where it has stood for the last 109 years, crossing the south channel of the Bow River.
In honour of this historically important structure, I have been live-tweeting the process that lead to the construction of the Zoobridge (with a small 110-year delay).
This will continue until next May and would have coincided with the original planned removal of the old structure to make way for the new bridge in 2018. However, due to safety concerns regarding the old structure, the tear-down was moved forward by a year. Nonetheless, the live-tweets shall continue as planned.
